I would like to share my TMJ story if anyone has had a similar experience.

My symptoms are staying steady.

I would like to share my story to see if anyone has had a similar experience.
7 weeks ago I had a cavity filled on a top left and top right tooth. These were small cavities, far from the nerve of the teeth. After my Novocain injection, my right side cheek swelled up and created a big, heavy pocket of blood in my cheek. It took nearly 2 weeks for the swelling and bruising to disappear but my severe pain continues. All of my teeth (not just the ones that had work done) are sensitive to hot, cold, and hard foods. If I eat any food other than soft and room temperature foods then I get a shooting pain through my teeth and jaw. In addition to my teeth hurting, my jaw gets inflamed, stiff, and extremely painful at random times throughout the day. I am currently on 8 ibuprofen a day and a muscle relaxer at night, but my symptoms are staying steady.
Maybe it is still too early in the game (7 weeks) to worry about this possibly being permanent damage. My dentist does not seem concerned, but this is severely affecting my quality of life.
Thanks!

I’m going through the exact same thing! I had oral surgery two weeks ago and developed the same thing. It’s like a big lump inside my jaw and is a bit swollen. I will say my pain is almost gone but the lump inside is still there. They say it gets better on its own if it’s not a serious case.

Janelle Nippard
7 weeks seems like a fairly long time though? For your cheek to still be swollen?!

Janelle Nippard
When did you visit your dentist last?

Leah Krieg
My swollen cheek went down after 2 weeks, but my pain is still the same. I have been to my dentist 4 times, got a second option from another dentist, I have gone to 2 chiropractors, and I have seen my primary physician. Last time I saw my dentist was on Monday.

Janelle Nippard
Did your dentist say it was a hematoma?

Janelle Nippard
What did your dentist say?! To me, there’s definitely something going on. I mean, 7 weeks is a bit much to still be in pain?

Kate Carpenter
You need a second opinion from a dentist out of town, not somebody that might know your dentist. In addition to the swelling, do you have pain upon opening that you did nto have before?

Leah Krieg
Janelle Nippard my dentist doesn’t seem concerned, neither does the second option dentist that I went to. They gave me a fluoride toothpaste…. I already know that will not help.

Leah Krieg
Kate Carpenter Yes, I will get a 3rd opinion. I am going to drive 3 hours for it. I have constant pain in my jaw now and I cannot open my mouth fully anymore.

Janelle Nippard
I’m so, so sorry you are going through this. I sympathize and understand because I’ve been there. My dental experiences in the past 8 months have been terrible. As if I wasn’t terrified before, now I get major anxiety even thinking of one. To know the pain you are in and be told nothing is wrong is just so horrible 😞 I truly hope you get answers soon. How are you sleeping at night in that shape? Must be exhausting for you 😞

Get a second opinion

Leah Krieg
Already got one. They took X-rays and found nothing evidently wrong. They sent me home with fluoride toothpaste.

Shannon Bower Kenneally
Leah Krieg, that was smart. I saw you requested an antibiotic too which was good. Heal well!

Marvi Hamoy Soliva
Where’s your xray?
Did your Dentist prescribe antibiotic?

Leah Krieg
I got many X-rays and nothing appeared wrong. I just convinced my dentist to give me an antibiotic because I was starting to get scared, but she doesn’t necessarily think that an antibiotic is needed. I don’t think she believes how much pain I am in.

Marvi Hamoy Soliva
Can i see your Xray?

Leah Krieg
Marvi Hamoy Soliva I don’t have it. I’ve never had a doctor or dentist show me my xrays. Is that strange?

Helen Charters
Sounds horrendous. No harm in getting a second opinion.

Leah Krieg
Already got one. They took X-rays and found nothing evidently wrong. They sent me home with fluoride toothpaste

Mona Strand
Infection? 7 weeks is a long long time girl, can u see another dentist for a second opinion?

Leah Krieg

Mona Strand
holy cow 😐 ok, i hope this gets better soon because you cant go around like that ❤

Eliza Winchester
Yes I agree with the above – please get a second opinion and don’t mention to them who did this to you just be neutral and see what they say.

Drshweta Arora
Is that swelling still there??

Leah Krieg
Swelling went down after week 2.

Suzy Evans
It was a tooth extraction that caused me migraines and then chronic migraines and my C1 and C2 became rotated…..you must find another dentist or neoromysculst dentist to see if your jaw has shifted and stop the damage now, not decades later

Drshweta Arora
That swelling was due to accidental injury to posterior superior artery.your pain is not at related to that swelling. That injury was temporary one .you have pain in one of your restored tooth.this pain will be relieved by root canal therapy.get it done as soon as possible.else it will get converted into chronic periapical abscess

Janelle Nippard
Yes I was going to suggest maybe your tooth didn’t take to the filling and u need a root canal instead.

Ed Zere
Smart – agree! Further find a good endodontist and TMJ specialist to evaluate the teeth and TMJ accordingly. What will your dentist do if this happen to him/ her or her family member, please ask. Your dentist must ask the colleagues for second opinion for the sake of patient health – small brain dentist that even was his/her responsibility not to happen this, can not follow your recovery properly ! Be positive, determined and seek more professional help.

Leah Krieg
Thank you so much. I will keep pushing ahead and be my own advocate.

Nurul Aini
Maybe you have crack tooth syndrome in your filling tooth, please find an endodontist soon. Get well soon

Drshweta Arora
Its not in abscess stage right now but will get converted into the same if it doesn’t get treated at time.right now its in acute pulpitis stage.

Leah Krieg
You think that acute pulpitis could be causing all the jaw issues too?? Stiff and sore jaw, ear aches, headaches, neck stiffness and soreness? Also, I cannot pinpoint just 1 tooth causing the issue. All my teeth hurt and the pain travels around in my mouth.

Vanessa Rocio Balderrama
This happened to my uncle. It took a while but it went away. He is now terrified of the dentist

Leah Krieg
I bet he is! I feel for him! I get anxiety anytime I have to eat or go to the dentist now. Did he get treatment from a specialist or just wait it out?

Vanessa Rocio Balderrama
Leah Krieg just waited it out.. and didn’t pay for the service.

Will you please post another picture? To compare

Radiating pain is a very common phenomenon with acute puplitis.dental pain travels from one part to another .this pain becomes unbearable when patient lie down in most of the cases.some small cavities can also activate your C fibers of pulp of dentinal tubules are wide.C fibers of are very deeply situated nerve fibers of pulp which get activates mostly in deep cavities but in patients with wide dentinal tubules they get affected during cavity preparation for restorations.once they get affected its highly unlikely to reverse the process and this pain gets relieved by too canal therapy only.

Kimberly Fujioka
It’s terrible! Maybe you should go to someone else and see what they think.

Tienes una irritación al sistema nervioso busca a un médico que haga terapia neural o a un Odontologo Neurofocal

If the pains and swelling continues you must return to see your dentist. Good luck

Please don’t eat hard food, hot tea or coffee becomes it will give you sensitive. How many week from extraction are comes.

Manpreet Batra
Plz send xray of tooth filled

OMG! It’s possible that your dentist hit a nerve when injecting you with the numbing fluid. That happened to me with hand surgery over 2 years ago and if I move in a certain way the tingling pain is still there. I’ve also had horrible fillings by a dentist before, and just like you I was experiencing a lot of pain. Your dentist needs to fix the issue. First step in my opinion would be for him to redo the fillings to see if that is part of the issue, because the pain could be due to a number of things – they could have hit a nerve, they could have not filled the cavities properly, they could have not filed the fillings down enough and now your other teeth are getting bruised. If your dentist wont fix it, find one that will, because being in that amount of pain after fillings is not normal.

Brooke Lehman
This exact thing happened to me. I had a hematoma after the injection into the mandibular nerve – no swelling though. I am on week 10 of awful pain still. I do have TMJ/TMD really bad on both sides the but the right side where the dental work was is 100 times worse. I fear nerve damage. Did you pain ever subside??
