The cons of joining a gym are the cost can be expensive. You are exposed to bacteria left on the equipment by others. You need to get up and get yourself to the gym so there is a certain amount of motivation necessary as well as transportation necessary to get to the gym. You may be shy to have others see you in your exercise clothing especially in the beginning as your body will likely pale in comparison to the lean, trim bodies of those who have been exercising for years.

You would of course want to weight the pros and cons of using a gym against the alternatives which might be designing a home gym, or working out at a local track, or joining a yoga class, or buying a Pilates tape. The gym is not for everyone. Some gyms will give you a trial membership so that you can try it out to see if it is right for you.
