Birds are amazing creatures, but unfortunately, they’re also prone to a variety of diseases. Below, we’ll give you a quick rundown of the 5 most common avian diseases and how you can tell if your bird might be affected by them.

1. Feather mites: Tiny parasites that live on birds’ feathers, which can cause balding, itching, and irritation.

2. Scaly leg mites: Another type of parasite that lives on birds’ legs and causes the tissue to become dry and scaly.

3. Chlamydophila psittaci: A bacterial infection that affects birds’ internal organs and respiratory system.

4. Psittacosis: This disease is caused by chlamydia bacteria (yes, the same kind that also affects humans) and can spread to humans easily; therefore it’s important to see a doctor immediately if you suspect your bird has this disease!

5. Avian pox: A viral infection that causes lesions on your bird’s feet, beak, or mouth area—often with a scab-like appearance over time.

These diseases are actually a group of viruses that affect most kinds of birds.
